Hawaiian Sherb Cake: Preserving a Piece of Cannabis History
How a forgotten Hawaiian line from the early internet forums evolved into one of ABF Genetics’ most ambitious preservation projects
By ABF Genetics • Oakland, California • Est. 2010
Modern cannabis breeding has become increasingly dominated by dessert cultivars, candy terpenes, and the pursuit of ever-higher resin production. While many exceptional varieties have emerged from this trend, something has also been lost along the way. Tropical expressions, uplifting effects, and heirloom-inspired cultivars have quietly disappeared from many breeding programs.
Hawaiian Sherbcake was developed in an effort to preserve one of those experiences.
Created from Federation Hawaiian F2 #15 × (Wedding Cake × Sunset Sherbert), Hawaiian Sherb Cake combines a rare Hawaiian line from the early days of online cannabis culture with some of the most influential modern cultivars available today. The result is a vigorous, adaptable plant with a distinctive tropical floral profile, a gentle layer of cream inherited from Wedding Cake and Sunset Sherbert, and an experience that friends have simply described as “having a spa day.”
The Story Behind Federation Hawaiian F2 #15
Long before social media became the center of cannabis culture, growers congregated on forums such as ICMAG to exchange knowledge, preserve genetics, and share treasured seed stock.
The Hawaiian parent used in Hawaiian Sherbcake traces back to the legendary Federation Seed Company, an influential Canadian seed bank active during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Federation became known for introducing unique tropical and Hawaiian-inspired cultivars to growers around the world.
The specific line used in this project, Federation Hawaiian F2 #15, was shared with me by longtime friend and community member Stoney917, an old acquaintance from the forums and ICMAG.
Prior to that, the seeds had been faithfully reproduced by respected preservationist RC Cola, who later shared them with Stoney. Through years of stewardship and careful reproduction, these genetics remained available to a small circle of collectors and breeders.
From that population, I personally selected Federation Hawaiian F2 #15 for its vigorous growth, exceptional adaptability, tropical floral aroma, and uniquely uplifting effect.
It represented something that seemed increasingly difficult to find in modern cultivars—a genuinely euphoric and positive experience that wasn’t racy, edgy, or anxiety-inducing.
Bringing Old Hawaii Into The Modern Era
To complement the Hawaiian line, I created a reversed Wedding Cake × Sunset Sherbert female and made selections from that population. One of those selections was eventually offered through Archive Seed Bank’s dispensary.
Rather than using the Hawaiian as the pollen donor, I decided to reverse my selected (Wedding Cake × Sunset Sherbert) female and pollinate Federation Hawaiian F2 #15.
The objective was simple.
Preserve as much of the Hawaiian character as possible while introducing modern improvements in resin production, flower density, visual appeal, and overall finishing quality.
The resulting cultivar became Hawaiian Sherb Cake.
Growth Characteristics
Hawaiian Sherbcake has proven itself to be remarkably adaptable.
Growers can expect:
Flowering Time: 9–10 weeks
Stretch: 2–3×
Environment: Indoor / Outdoor
Climate Adaptation: Wet & Dry Climates
Structure: Strong lateral branching and vigorous vegetative growth
Unlike many modern dessert cultivars that struggle outdoors in humid environments, Hawaiian Sherb Cake appears to retain much of the resilience associated with its Hawaiian ancestry.
For outdoor growers in regions with summer rainfall and elevated humidity, this has become one of its most appreciated characteristics.
Aroma and Experience
Hawaiian Sherb Cake offers a terpene profile that feels distinctly tropical while remaining refined and approachable.
Expect aromas reminiscent of:
Tropical white flowers
Citrus blossom
Sweet island fruit
Soft whipped cream
Vanilla frosting
Delicate sherbet undertones
The Federation Hawaiian influence dominates the bouquet, contributing an unmistakable expression of tropical florals and bright citrus, while the Wedding Cake and Sunset Sherbert lineage rounds things out with a subtle layer of cream and confectionery sweetness.
Many modern cultivars lean heavily into candy, gas, or baked goods.
Hawaiian Sherbcake moves in another direction entirely.
The overall impression is bright, clean, and uplifting—more akin to walking through a tropical garden, spending an afternoon at a luxury spa, or sitting beside the ocean after a massage than indulging in a rich dessert.
Friends and collectors have often described the experience as simply:
“Like having a spa day.”
For those seeking cultivars that encourage relaxation, creativity, conversation, and a sense of well-being without excessive stimulation, Hawaiian Sherb Cake has become a favorite.
More Than A Single Cultivar
Hawaiian Sherbcake was never intended to be a one-time release.
After seeing how well Federation Hawaiian F2 #15 combined with the selected Wedding Cake × Sunset Sherbert female, I continued exploring the Hawaiian line by reversing additional selections and pairing them back to both clone-only cultivars and elite modern hybrids.
Over time, Hawaiian Sherb Cake has been recreated and expanded using a growing collection of carefully selected mothers, including:
Strawnana
Strawberry Cough
Dosidos #6
Sherbanger #22
Zlushie × Gelato #41
Han Solo Burger
Blue Lobster
Additional proprietary ABF selections
Each pairing allows the Federation Hawaiian influence to express itself in new ways while preserving many of the characteristics that made the original selection special.
Some combinations lean heavily into tropical florals and citrus blossom notes, while others reveal unexpected layers of cream, berry, candy, fuel, or even savory complexity.
For ABF Genetics, Hawaiian Sherb Cake has evolved beyond a single cultivar.
It has become an ongoing breeding project and a framework for preserving an old Hawaiian line while exploring how it interacts with some of today’s most sought-after genetics.
Preserving More Than Just Seeds
For ABF Genetics, Hawaiian Sherb Cake represents more than another modern hybrid.
It is a tribute to the growers, breeders, and preservationists who quietly maintained important genetics long after they disappeared from commercial catalogs.
From Federation Seed Company’s original Hawaiian work, to RC Cola’s reproductions, to Stoney917’s stewardship within the ICMAG community, Hawaiian Sherb Cake carries forward a lineage that might otherwise have been lost.
And perhaps most importantly, it preserves a feeling.
An uplifting, tropical, clear-headed experience that reminds us cannabis can still surprise us—not with intensity, but with comfort, beauty, and a simple sense of well-being.
